Description: The Type 99 rifle is one Japan’s most famous military rifles, and was the last standard rifle adopted by the armed forces of Imperial Japan before World War 2. It was introduced in 1939 and was still in production when the war ended in 1945, with roughly 3.5 million rifles having been produced. The Arisaka was altered as the war went on, changes made to it focused on increasing the speed of production. As such, the rifles became much more crude in comparison to early war examples. The rifle shown here is in fact a Nagoya Series 1 rifle produced from late 1941 to the early part of 1942. The bolt’s serial number does match the receiver’s. The rifle does not retain the mono-pod or dust cover but does retain is aircraft sights. Often ridiculed, it is important to comprehend the context in which this feature was developed for the Type 99. At the time the rifle and its sight were being designed, Japan’s main combat area was in China. That nation had very little in the way of a modern air force. The aircraft sights were intended to help shoot down a reconnaissance aircraft, usually a fabric-skinned biplane, with Japanese troops utilizing a form of volley fire to ensure multiple hits on the slow-moving aircraft simultaneously. The sights were never intended to be used against high speed, duralumin-skinned fighter aircraft like the F6F, P-47, or P-51. The rifles chrysanthemum remains wholly intact as are the rest of receiver’s markings. The bore is in nearly pristine shape – there is no visible pitting. The upper and lower tangs, the magazine floor plate, the butt plate, and trigger guard assembly all have a light to medium amount of pitting present. The wood is fairly beat up, but there no visible cracks. The receiver and barrel exhibit a good amount of wear to the finish. It’s obvious this rifle has seen hard use. Without doubt, if this rifle could talk it would have a very interesting story to tell.
