This Winchester-made rifle was arsenal overhauled prior to WW2, and has the Weedon repair star marking on both the receiver and the "W" marked, non-matching bolt. The metal retains about 85-90% of the original blue finish with silvering at the muzzle, as well as along the high edges and projections, particularly on the bearing surfaces of the bolt. The rifle is fitted with an Eddystone-made, Model 1917 stock (it is believed that some 1917 stocks were fitted by the Weedon Depot if the originals were deemed "beyond repair") that has minor handling marks and blemishes in the reapplied military oil finish. Additionally, there is a rectangular arsenal repair to the forend, just ahead of the swivel band. The rifle is further equipped with a Remington-designed, experimental rear sight, added to the original matching-numbered Winchester sight ladder. This sight was designed to address the lack of windage adjustment in the stock M1917 rear sight, and a handful were assembled in 1918 by Remington. It is unknown how the sight came to be installed on a British P-14 made by Winchester, but the stamped part number (2283692) is identical to one installed on a Remington Model 1917 rifle that was once part of both the Remington Museum and William Brophy collections. This is a very good-fine example of an armory refurbished Pattern 14, with an extremely rare experimental rear sight.
