Description:
Scarce Bacon Manufacturing Pocket Model Revolver with Bacon markings, only about 500 of these, second model with factory-engraved frame, blued barrel and blued fluted cylinder, 5 shot single action 31 caliber percussion, walnut grips, 5 inch round barrel, matching serial numbers on bottom of barrel, back of cylinder, wedge and inside of grips.

CONDITION: Retains a partially bright good bore showing scattered light pitting and oxidation with good rifling throughout. This is a rather nice second model revolver, the barrel retaining about 25% original bright blue with the balance flaked to a pleasant gray-brown patina showing a few specks of mild oxidation staining and light handling marks. The fluted cylinder retains perhaps 40% original bright blue with the balance flaked similar to the barrel and the frame has mostly flaked to a medium gray-brown patina showing some scattered light pinprick pitting and freckling, the sideplate with some generous bright blue. The hammer and loading lever show areas of generous vibrant case-hardened colors muting to gray, the frame shows nice wide foliate scrollwork and the barrel shows strong “BACON MFG CO” markings. The smooth walnut grips remain in very fine to near excellent condition retaining about 95% original varnish showing some scattered light dings and handling marks. The right panel is pencil-numbered to the gun and their fit is excellent. The action functions well mechanically with very good timing and lock-up. As with the Colt 1849 Pocket, Smith & Wesson #2 Old Army, Colt Pocket Police, and Manhattan Navy revolver, the Bacon was sometimes used as a secondary private back up weapon by NCOs and Officers on both sides of the Civil War.
