Description:
NSN, .44 Caliber, 32 5/8" heavy octagon barrel with a fine, bright bore that has traces of freckling within the grooves. The barrel is turned and drilled for a false muzzle and bullet-starter, with a pleasant browned metal finish along its length. There are traces of silvering along the edges of the barrel facets, with crisp "N. LEWIS TROY" markings fore and aft of the notched rear sight with old bone insert. The front sight is a period replacement and has a slightly bent thin metal blade. The back-action lock is mated two double-set triggers and is functional, but the trigger does not always set properly. The walnut halfstock has chips missing from the nose on either side of the ornate pewter cap, and the ornate wrist tang is drilled for a no longer present lollipop rear sight. There are some minor handling marks and blemishes throughout, as well as a single with-the-grain crack at the lock screw. The wedge is not original, does not fit well, and has caused some minor damage to the original German silver escutcheons. This is a handsome, well-made rifle, by a well-known New York maker, and is in very good condition overall. Antique
