Description:
"

This Type I Gwyn & Campbell 52 caliber percussion carbine is circa 1863. About 8,200 total of all types were made in Hamilton, OH. They are often called ""Union Carbines"" or ""Grapevine Carbines."" About 4,200 Type I carbines were made. They can be identified by the rounded serpentine shaped hammer and lever. The 20"" octagon to round barrel has a very good bore with strong rifling and firing erosion. It has the early long base rear sight graduated to 900 yards. The barrel has an even brown patina with a few areas of surface roughness. The lock is marked GWYN & CAMPBELL over PATENT over 1862 over HAMILTON. O. and the right frame front is marked UNION RIFLE. The frame and lever are gray-brown with areas of light pittingĀ  The lock is gray with plum spotting and the hammer is a smooth brown. The butt plate is brown with minor surface roughness at the heel. The sling bar and ring are present. The stock is very good with light usage wear, no cracks or chips, and a visible cartouche. The action functions correctly. The Type I carbines were used hard during the Civil War. Good examples like this one are surprisingly hard to find.
