Approximately 5,000 percussion, slant breech, single shot, pellet-primed 52 caliber Sharps Model 1852 carbines were made by Robbins & Lawrence, Windsor, VT, for the Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Company, Hartford, CT, from 1853 to 1855. The round 21.5"" barrel has a very good bore with strong rifling and moderate firing erosion. The barrel has a mixture of gray and brown patina. It is marked SHARPS RIFLE over MANUFg. Co. over HARTFORD. CONN. at the breech. It has the standard bladed front sight and Lawrence rear sight. The action, lever, hammer, and band have a smooth gray-brown patina. The brass butt plate has an even patina with a couple of dark spots. The brass patch box has an even patina with one darker spot. The right side of the action is marked C. SHARPS over PATENT over 1852 and the tang is marked C.SHARPS over PATENT over 1848. The tang has a filled screw hole to the rear of the serial number, 6979. This carbine is not equipped with a sling bar and ring. Rather, it has a sling swivel on the band and another on the rear of the trigger guard tang. The butt stock is good with an added finish coat, no cracks or chips, and light overall wear. The forend is good with added finish, a chip just forward of the lever, and old missing wood at the top along the barrel (It sounds worse than it looks.). The action functions correctly. This is a very good overall example of the scarce Sharps Model 1852 carbine. Let this one fill the hole in your collection!
