Here we present an antique U.S. Remington New Model Navy Cartridge Conversion Revolver, made circa 1863 to 1875 in Ilion, New York. Remington manufactured approximately 22,000 of the .36 caliber New Model Most Navy revolvers were made in the original percussion format, though some actually left the factory in the .38 caliber centerfire configuration. As mentioned, this revolver has been converted from percussion to utilize .38 Centerfire cartridges, making these very desirable in the budding metallic cartridge revolver market. Smith & Wesson’s infamous Rollin White Patent was just expiring. The US Navy even experimented with a small contract (approximately 1000) of these revolvers in this example’s configuration, with a loading gate and ejector rod built in. These Navy models were fitted with hinged and latched loading gates, and nearly all came with ejector
The overall condition is good. Excellent action. Bright bore with nice rifling. The makers address on the top of the barrel is worn, but remains partially legible. Both grips are in very good shape with light wear and a smooth finish. Numbers match. The modern holster is in good shape. Here is a very scarce and desirable factory cartridge conversion of Remington’s New Model Navy!
