Description:
HARD TO FIND MARLIN 1895 OCTAGON RIFLE IN .38-56 CALIBER, #151XXX, MADE 1897.  The 1895s have become very hard to find in any condition and in any caliber. The .38-56 is an under-estimated and little understood cartridge by most people who think it is little more than the standard .38-55 cartridge.  Completely wrong! The .38-55 is a straight wall case based on the .30WCF (.30-30) case. It held around 42-45 grains of black powder. The .38-56 is based on the big .45-70 case necked down and was loaded with a full 56 grains of powder. The .38-56 is a very potent round! This rifle shows fine deep blue on the barrel with the mag tube aged to light brown. The receiver case colors have also aged to a mottled dark gray to brown.  Fine blue on the loading gate. Needs filler screws for the factory tang sight holes. Excellent markings including the Special Smokeless Steel stamping on the barrel side and Marlin Safety on the receiver top. The correct 26" barrel has an extra small dovetail 8 inches back from the muzzle where I assume it once held a scope mount. The dovetail appears as old as the rifle as the inside metal is dark- if the dovetail had been done recently, the metal would be bright. Spacing from center of the rear dovetail to center of the forward dovetail is approx 11 5/8".  Front sight is a very small blade and the rear sight is full buckhorn with elevation bar intact. Stock and forearm are solid and show good wood to metal fit with only normal handling marks and a couple of very small dings on the right side of the forend that have some very wood fill. Tight action, strong hammer spring and safety notch. Best of all, the bore is sharp and excellent with only a very small bit or dark color. This is a true "attic condition" rifle that still has some ancient dried grease on the receiver and lever etc. I haven't tried to clean it.
