Springfield Model 1873 "Trapdoor" rifle chambered in .45-70 Government. The Model 1873 was the first standard-issue breech-loading rifle adopted by the U.S. Army and used throughout the Indian Wars of the 1870s-1880s as well as the Spanish American War. The serial number (83609) indicates that the rifle was produced in 1878. This infantry rifle model features a 32-1/2-inch barrel and comes with its cleaning rod. .45-70 Government
