Wesson Fire Arms was a company formed when Frank Wesson and several others separated from Smith & Wesson. While not officially issued by the US, approval was given for individuals to purchase the carbine. 151 were ordered by the US for the state of Ohio. Wessons were found on the battlefield after the battle of Gettysburg. Approximately 4.500 military versions were produced in Worcester, Mass., from 1862 to 1864. They were purchased by many state governments during the American Civil War, including Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Missouri, and Ohio. This carbine caliber is .44 rim fire. Barrel is marked in two lines “FRANK WESSON, WORCESTER MASS.”/ “PAT-D OCT.25 1859 & NOV.11 1862”. Carbine has rounded steel frame with circular side plate. Barrel is 24” octagonal with a sling swivel drilled and tapped on bottom 7” from end of barrel. This is the “military” version with a carbine barrel, three position leaf rear sight, slotted “stop” on the right side of the barrel and sling swivels The hammer is designed for rim fire only. The breech of the barrel has a recess on the left side of the breech to facilitate manual removal of a spent shell. The second sling swivel is mounted on the rear of the trigger guard tang. In 1862, the sliding shell ejector was patented and added to production so this carbine was probably made after 1862. Military style curved butt plate with the carbine “flat” on the top of the butt stock. Carbine has two trigger type devices. With the hammer half cocked, the front one releases the barrel and allows it to break open for breech loading. The second one is the trigger for firing. The barrel has original bluing which has patinaed to a grayish color. The steel frame is a smooth silverish color with some gray micro spotting. See picture. The mechanism cover plate has evidence of being removed at some point and bears a few small tool marks around the screw.. Mechanics are fine with distinct clicks and trigger release. Bore is bright and shiny with light to moderate scattered light surface pitting and boring marks towards the breech. Rear sight is blued with distinct range markings. Woodstock is in good condition with an aged sheen. and typical ding and dents from use. There is one half inch aging crack radiating from the top of the butt plate and dies in the wood. This carbine is in nice condition and indicative of the variety of weapons purchased for the civil war. Shipping is $50 anywhere in continental US. Since it is an antique, it can be shipped directly to the buyer. No license necessary. SOLD Antique: Yes |
