It is the Type 3 variation, meaning it has no barrel bushing and lacks (fortunately) the magazine safety of the later Type 4. These were manufactured between 1910 and 1926. According to the Colt database, this pistol was manufactured in 1919. Like the previous Type 2, the barrel is 3.75 inches long, a little shorter than the Type 1’s 4-inch barrel. The original magazine is present. Original magazines of the period generally feature a two-tone finish. This was a result of the tempering process. After the magazines were blued (via a Carbonia-blue), the magazines were dipped in a cyanide bath at a temperature of several hundred degrees, in order to temper the feed lips. The result was that the bluing at the top was removed where the magazine was dipped into the bath. Hence the two-tone finish. This example however has an all-blued finish. The wear to the finish indicates the bluing is original to the magazine and the loss is from friction due to constant use. The pistol shown here has a well-worn finish, particularly with respect to the slide. According to the consignor, his father carried this pistol as a back-up gun during World War 2. It comes with what was originally a German holster for a Walther P38. It was cut down to fit the 1903 a little better. Mechanically, the pistol is fully functional. The bore has some frosting in the grooves, but it should not affect the 1903’s accuracy a great deal. There are some minor scratches on the right hand side of the slide, behind the serrations. The back and left side of the slide exhibit small spots of pitting. The markings are all very clear and legible. Surprisingly, the hard rubber grips lack the usual cracks or missing chunks commonly associated with this type of grip. Rubber technology, as applied to handgun grips, was rather poor in the at the beginning of the 20th Century and at least into the 1920s. The rubber would eventually turn into a hard, brittle substance that invariably cracked and broke off. The magazine still has good spring tension as does the magazine release spring and recoil spring. These pistols were extremely popular in their day as concealed carry guns, particularly by persons in plain clothes. They were widely used on both sides of the law. The 1903 was essentially the Glock 43 of its time. SOLD Handgun Caliber: .32 ACP (7.65x17mm Browning SR) Manufacturer: Colt's PT. F.A. Mfg. Co.
