Description:
NSN, .50 Caliber, 10" fluted octagon barrels with fine, bright bores that have hints of freckling within the grooves. This is a handsome set of Belgian-made guns (all proofs and markings are on the underside of the barrels, beneath the forends) and are numbered "1" and "2" on the top tangs. The pistols have additional features typical of a continental European dueling set: large-bore rifled barrels, spur trigger guards, adjustable rear sights (the spanner is still present), and two sets of loading and cleaning tools. The pistols retain 70-80% of the original blue on the barrels with some mild silvering at the muzzle, along the edges and projections, as well as some mottled plum-brown freckling on the balance. The finely engraved locks have some original color case-hardening on protected areas under the hammer, but mostly have a dull, pewter gray patina with mottled areas of dark brown freckling. The walnut stocks have the "JNI" initials of a rather prolific stock carver whose initials can be found on many Belgian-made dueling and target pistols. The pistols are housed in a large, two-tiered wooden case with French-fit, green baize-lined top level containing: the pistols, bullet mold, two turn-screws, oiler, small brass ladle, wooden mallet, and two wooden containers (one of which has a broken lid). The lower level has eight compartments containing: a second bullet mold, steel mallet, two sets of cleaning and loading rods, rear sight spanner, powder tin, powder measure, and lock escutcheon (the key is not present). The lid has the retailer’s name embossed in gold: "LAGEZE Bt. / 10 RUE RAMBUTEAU / PARIS"; Lagreze was a Paris firm that operated from 1846 – 1890. and was closely connected to the Liege gun trade. This is a fine set of duelers, well-made and fully functional, and would make a great addition to any collection. Antique
