Description:
This is a great example of the extremely rare Hicks U.S. Military Civil war knife. Older collectors always believed these knives were made in the late 1830's. Even before the famous AMES 1849 Riflemansknife. Recent research has confirmed that A.G. Hicks produced them in Cleveland, Ohio between 1859-1861. So few examples have survived , that even most advanced knife collections are absent of one. This knife has the most clear and precise maker make of any of the few examples I have seen in person or in books in 50 years. The markings are as follows: A.G. HICKS /  MAKER / CLEV'D O.  Most known knives have a very weak marking from wear and handling.  The spear point blade is 9 1/16" long. Overall lenght is 13 5/8" long. Blade has some very minor pitting and one knick on blade edge. I'm sure the blade has had a minor cleaning at some time. Nothing overdone. Brass has a mellow tone to it. You can see in the pics where it has had some banging at one time. Scabbard is not the original. But I believe a period made replacement. Fits perfectly. If you collect knives, you know the extreme rarity of an ORIGINAL A.G. HICKS CIVIL WAR KNIFE. Please call 973-214-3407 with questions. Thankyou
