Features a 22 inch tapered round nickel steel barrel with a bright shiny near excellent bore chambered in the desirable 45-70 Govt. caliber. In fact the diameter at the end of the magazine is actually larger than muzzle of the barrel. Sights include a Marble's Sheard brass bead front with a blank filler in the rear and a Lyman 21 receiver sight. Receiver and barrel show Winchester "WP" factory proof marks indicating that the rifle went back to the factory sometime after 1905. The mag tube retains most all of its original blue and the barrel shows some thinning of the blue but still retains most all of it as well. Receiver has about 70% original blue with a little flaking and worn to a pewter gray on the bottom at the carry point. Hammer and lever are blued. Good legible markings. Smooth walnut stocks are in very good condition and good fitting with just minor handling and usage mars. The shotgun butt is fitted with a Winchester solid red rubber pad. Nice crisp action and set trigger works fine. This is an interesting Winchester rifle that was made in 1897 and went back to the factory for some upgrades to an unusual configuration. Should be a handy shooter. Leroy Merz Antique Firearms specializes in antique and vintage Winchesters and other fine American firearms.
