The metal surfaces of this Type III musket are toning to a lightly-oxidized dark gray and brown patina with moderate pitting around the added bolster and some fine pitting on the upper band, a couple small vise “bite” mark on the left side of the breech and some scattered tiny impact and light handling marks overall. The lockplate is properly-marked “US / A. WATE” with the “E” softened and the “RS” of WATERS no longer legible while a softened “MILLBURY / 1825” is behind the hammer. The left side of the breech bears “ET” over a raised “P” in sunken oval cartouche and any other markings on the breech are now lost and “CBS” is on the triggerguard ahead of the bow and “K” is behind. The American black walnut stock rates about good as lightly cleaned, with a few other scattered cracks and light handling marks. There is a softened inspector’s cartouche of script initials in an oval on the left stock flat, the flats retaining some rather nice edges, and “JMW” is scratched onto the right side of the buttstock and “JMS” is on the left. The sling swivels, bayonet stud and brass front sight blade are intact, a steel button-head ramrod which does not seat all the way is included and the action remains strong and crisp. Asa Waters delivered over 36,000 stands of arms under multiple contracts with the federal government between 1816-1836.
