VERY EARLY ANTIQUE 1892 .44-40 OCTAGON RIFLE, #13XXX, WITH FACTORY LETTER SHOWING A SHIPPING DATE OF MAY, 1893. This is a true "attic condition" example that shows no signs of cleaning. The receiver, barrel and mag tube are an even deep plum/blue overall. Looking carefully one can see some deeper blue on the loading gate, barrel and bolt. The walnut has some fancy grain to it- that is covered with 130 years of grime! All markings are fine, buckhorn rear sight with elevator bar intact and Winchester blade front sight. Tight action, good half-cock notch. Surprisingly good bore for such an early black powder 1892 shows good rifling and only some minor scattered spots of surface roughness. Always a surprise to find early Winchesters like this that haven't been cleaned. Excellent screw heads. An attractive early 1892 in the most desirable and hard to find caliber. Factory letter included.
