Description:
Scarce British LEE-ENFIELD SMLE No. 1 Mk. V .303 Cal. BOLT ACTION Rifle C&R

BRITISH MILITARY Predecessor to the No. 4 Mk I

Here we present a C&R British Short Magazine Lee-Enfield (SMLE) No. 1 Mk. V Bolt Action Rifle, made in 1924. The Lee-Enfield is a bolt-action, magazine fed, repeating rifle that served as the main firearm used by the military forces of the British Empire and Commonwealth during the first half of the 20th century.

Manufactured in the early 1920s, the Short Magazine Lee-Enfield No. 1 Mk. V was an interim step between the No. 1 Enfield used throughout World War I and the No. 4 Enfield that served throughout World War II. The Mk. V was intended to be both a whole new model of rifle, as well as an upgrade pattern that could be applied to Great Britain’s then surviving stocks of service rifles, leaving it very close in overall configuration to the earlier No. 1 rifles. The steel forearm cap/bayonet lug with the integral front sight wings and mounting point for a clamp-on grenade launcher mount is present, and the rear sight features a two-peep folding aperture sight with a fixed “battle” sight and a staff graduated from “2” to “14”. The King George cipher, 1924 date, and model mark are present on the right side of the socket, and a magazine cutoff is present on the receiver.

After World War One, the British looked at how to apply the lessons of the war to development of a new infantry rifle. Even before the war, a decision had been made to move to an aperture type rear sight – which would have been used on the Pattern 1913 Enfield, had the war no interrupted adoption of that model. So, after the war, trials were made on some No. 1 Mk III SMLE rifles refitted with rear aperture sights. These trials were successful enough to justify production of a substantial number of rifles for troop trials. This would be designated the No. 1 Mk V rifle, and 20,000 of them were made between 1922 and 1924.

The new rifles were taken to Bisley, and input was sought from both military units and civilian marksmen from the British NRA. The feedback that was received was that the sight was too fragile, its adjustments were too coarse, and the barrel was too light. These changes were implemented in the No. 1 Mk V rifle which would ultimately be adopted as the No. 4 Mk I, the classic World War II version of the Lee Enfield.

The overall condition is fine. Original finish. The action is excellent. The bore is excellent: shiny bright with sharp rifling. The stock is smooth and solid. The numbers match throughout. A fantastic and scarcer British military rifle!
