Description:
Offered is an early J. M. Marlin “Pacific” No. 5 Ballard rifle, S.N. 7738; This exceptionally fine Pacific rifle is chambered in the Ballard .40-63 caliber and is factory fitted with a heavy 30” octagonal barrel measuring 1.125” at the breech and 1.000” at the muzzle; caliber is stamped into the top barrel flat. The barrel has a near perfect bore; I rate it at 9.5 out of 10, based on my naked eye (no bore scope). The octagon barrel retains very sharp edges; the rear sight appear to have been replaced at some time in the past, as it’s blued finish does not correlate with the barrel finish. The receiver is rebated and has the 2 line J. M. Marlin address/Ballard patent stamping. The receiver, barrel, lever and buttplate are mostly a mottled patina. The rifle has the wonderful double set triggers that Ballard rifles are renowned for, and the action is worked via the loop and spur lever, which closes smartly. The pistol grip buttstock is a gorgeous figured walnut with the appearance of Circassian walnut, a raised cheekpiece, a fluted horn endcap, and a steel rifle buttplate; note the extra flat steel protection added to the bottom of the buttstock to prevent chipping the cusp of the buttplate; note further that the bottom of the buttstock is flat, much like a military arm, and not rounded like most civilian buttstocks. The forearm finishes with a slight schanble and black horn insert common to Ballards. Sharp, crisp checkering is present on the wrist, forearm and end cap. The cleaning rod appears to be original.

Altogether, this is a beautiful, well preserved, heavy barreled “Pacific” model Marlin Ballard rifle in a rare configuration and desirable caliber. Most “Pacific” rifles were field rifles and current offerings for sale show the hard use most “Pacific” rifles received. This rifle is obviously a special order rifle and has been extremely well cared for since it’s manufacture date.
