Lower 48 - $50.00 AK/HI - $95.00 Description: Confederate (CSA) - US Springfield, Model 1812 - DATED 1815 (lock and butt plate), .58 caliber SMOOTHBORE black powder percussion rifle. The barrel is 31.25 inches long and features the CSA RICHMOND barrel. Roughly 1862/1863 Model of the Richmond barrel. (This rifle is 100% a Civil War used rifle, and likely a Mexican-American War rifle as well prior to CSA conversion.) This rifle features its original military stock with the model 1812 factory dished cheek weld, with its original lock and butt plate. There is a US Armory inspectors cartouche on the stock, opposite side of the lock plate, and there is a unique stamp at the rear of the trigger guard (unknown if it's a Confederate or US stamp) The stock is in good original condition, not stained up, and does have a slight crack at the tang and wrist area, nothing major; the stock is NOT loose, it fits firm and nice in the wood. The stock does feature some period dents and dings concurrent with battle use. This rifle features two barrel bands which are Springfield model 1812 bands, and are either the type 1 or type 2 design. The barrel bands are NOT loose, and fit nicely to the weapon. They do not flop around, or fall off by themselves. The hammer is an orignal Austrian Lorenz rifle hammer with the Lorenz hammer screw. The hammer is period correct. It is clearly visible inside the hammers cup for the nipple and primer, that the hammer has been on since the arsenal work was completed and used as such since. The nipple and hammer track, and mesh perfectly together, and both have good matching patina to them. There is also a lot of stippling effect (caused from primer flash/sparks) to the breach area of the barrel providing good notions that this rifle was fired ALOT over its lifetime. The barrel/nipple clean out screw was replaced from its original Richmond barrel screw, to what appears to be a Lorenz rifle hammer screw as well. The clean out screw does have matching patina to the rest of the barrel, it is period correct. The rear tang of the barrel is held down with the original Springfield Model 1812 rear tang screw. It was not updated or changed out. The hammers half cock and full cock trigger mechanism operations work fine, with a good, healthy heavy spring tension. The lock, stock, and barrel fit very nicely together. This rifle has an excellent period aged patina that complements itself evenly across all components of this rifle. Overall this is a good example of a civil war Confederate Richmond rifle, in fairly good shape. There is an estimate that only 30,000 Springfield Model 1812 rifles were ever made, and this one features the CSA Richmond barrel! The barrel was cut to length to make a "Servicable Weapon" along with the correct original ramrod that was cut to match the barrel length. This musket is a possible artillery musketoon or cavalry service rifle based upon the length of the barrel. I have spoken with a few Civil War experts about this particular rifle (I can provide references upon request, and contact jnfo) and there is possible speculation this rifle could be from the "Western Theater" of the Civil War considering the Lorenz style hammer, and the appoximate model year range of the barrel (1862/1863). One gentleman said there were a lot of Lorenz rifles in the Western Theater later in the war; this info helps support the reason why it received the Lorenz hammer in its lifetime as a Civil War musket. Again, all presumptions on this rifle are based upon parts, info, and facts visiable on this firearm; and additional supporting facts are based upon facts, info, and knowns in the history of the American Civil War. Obviously interpret as you wish. Overall, this is a very nice, complete Confederate rifle, no doubt. You can own a piece of history today, and add this to any level of collection! More pictures to come and will be posted more in detail! Any questions please ask, thanks for looking!
