Marlin Model 1888 Rifle in .44-40 WCF, made circa 1888 in New Haven, Connecticut. This scarce Model 1888 repeater came with the top ejection action and was manufactured between 1888 and 1889 (with two built 1890 and two built in 1892) with only 4,814 produced before Marlin adopted the Model 1889 rifle with the side ejecting bolt and frame. Both the 1888 and 1889 models were designed by Lewis L. Hepburn of Colton, New York, who had previously worked for Remington Arms. The Model 1888 was developed in response to the popularity of Winchester and Colt's pistol-caliber repeating rifles and carbines. However, due to the adoption of Marlin's signature side eject models, the 1888 was destined to only a two-year production run. These rifles were produced in three calibers, those being .32-20 WCF, .38-40 WCF, and .44-40 WCF. Production number were 1,298 for the .32-20, 1,789 for the .38-40, and 1,727 for the .44-40. These rifles don’t show up very often with their limited production run, and it seems they are usually in .32-20 caliber, probably because they didn’t see the kind of hard frontier service that the .44-40 saw. Frontiersmen enjoyed the luxury of having ammo that fit both their side arm and long arm without having to change. One can only imagine a man on the western frontier sporting this rifle while having his “Colt .44” holstered on his hip. This example has a standard 24 inch octagon barrel with full magazine and crescent buttplate in caliber 44-40 Winchester Center Fire. The original cost of this rifle back in 1888 was around $18.00. Overall, the 1888 Marlin was well received on the frontier and nationwide. As mentioned, only 4,814 of the repeaters left the factory between 1888 and 1889. In its day, the model was considered state-of-the-art. The overall condition is very good. Original patina. The action is excellent. The bore is reflective with strong rifling. The walnut stock shows use and remains solid. This one looks like it has seen a lot of time outside and yet remains in great shape with a lively action. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 24 inches. Caliber: .44-40 Winchester Center Fire Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.
