Description:

UNIQUE Brace of UNDERHAMMER Percussion Pistols

Circa 1850s Saw Handles by J. Hermad

Here we present a pair of antique Saw-Handle Underhammer Percussion Pistols, made circa the 1850s by J. Hermad, very likely in France. The golden era of percussion firearms was fleeting; underhammers are one of the more interesting designs due to their simplicity, though they also eliminated any obstruction to sight picture. Underhammer pistols were probably most prominent in the northeastern United States in the mid-19th Century. However, these appear to have been made in Europe. Even more unique than typical underhammers, this pair utilizes a flat, one-piece leaf spring to act as the hammer. The spring swivels so that the user can place the percussion cap on the nipple, then swivels back to engage the hammer and hold the percussion cap in place. Thus, there is no cocking necessary to fire and a long pull of that ring trigger fires the pistol.

These pistols feature slender frames with ergonomic “saw handle” wooden grips, which place the axis of the bore low in the hand. The .27 caliber octagonal barrels are 3 inches in length and bear a “CROWN, FLEUR-DE-LIS, N” series of markings. The top of the frames are marked “J. HERMAD”, while the sides of the frames are decorated with stars. These are neat and utterly unique little pistols!

The overall condition is fine. Surfaces have a dark patina. The markings are clear and legible. The walnut grips are in very good condition. The bores are smooth and dark. The actions on these pistols are strong.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
