Description:
I am offering a P1855 Volunteer Royal Sappers and Miners / Lancaster’s Royal Engineers’ Carbine in outstanding condition. These carbines are made with the Lancaster patented oval bore. Unlike traditional rifling the oval bore looks like a smooth bore which made it much easier to clean. The performance was as good or better than the standard spiral rifling cut into the bore. This particular carbine has steel furniture vs the usual brass furniture. It was made for the commercial market and most likely intended for volunteers. These carbines were sold throughout the empire and who knows where else. There is even some research that suggests some were imported for the Civil War. As a matter of fact, Tiffany & Co. imported 40 of theses between 1861 and 1862. While this one does not have the Tiffany markings, many others were importing British arms during the same time frame.  The lock plate is engraved “LANCASTER’S / PATENT”. The right side of the barrel above the lock is engraved “151 NEW BOND St LONDON”. Additionally, in tiny letters appears “LANCASTER’S PATENT” above the bolster at the barrel breech. The British commercial proof marks appear on the left flat of the breech area. The number “4” is stamped on the bayonet lug. The original ramrod is maker marked in small letters. You can make out “J. FRANC  “ which is enough to tell that it was made by James Francis. He is listed as a Birmingham maker of “rammers” in the Firearms from Europe book. The barrel on this carbine measures 31 ¾”. I measured the bore in several places at the muzzle and got anywhere from .579-.608. I think this is normal for a Lancaster’s Oval Bore. The barrel is proofed as “25” which is .577. The action is very strong with the lock holding on both cocks and the hammer falling when the trigger is squeezed. The metal overall has a smooth mottled brownish coloration and the lock plate has a bluish brown patina. The wood is exceptionally nice with no flaws other than very minor handling dings. The oval bore is clean, shiny and smooth. There is a brass medallion on the top wrist of the stock which has no writing on it. You could personalize it and gift it to someone you want to impress! Considering the age of this carbine it is definitely in near fine antique condition. These carbines are pretty rare here in the U.S.. I think you would be hard pressed to find one this nice.
