Description:
SOLD About .38 cal., 40 1/2” octagon barrel with a heavily oxidized bore. The metal surfaces are an overall soft plum brown patina with scattered light oxidation and pinprick pitting over the surfaces. There is a simple brass blade front sight and flat-top rear with the top of the arm maker marked in cursive script “JL” flanked by some very light foliate engraving. The lockplate is rather squarish along its bottom edge and rear, showing some very light open scroll. There is a simple brass nosecap, thimbles and tailpipe, faceted single spur triggerguard, faceted buttplate and toeplate with a pierced four piece patchbox having a rear release. The door of the patchbox shows the same light scrolled “JL” with a bit of very folky vine-like engraving. The stock appears very much oak-like in its grain texture and figure, rating perhaps very good with numerous repaired cracks, a repaired break through the nose, a spliced-in piece on the left stock flat and a repaired toe crack. There are a few small inlays that have gone missing from the years and a very scant square-bottom cheekpiece. Equipped with double set triggers and a single-acting lock, the trigger must be tripped a couple times before the hammer will fall, and there is an antique replacement ramrod included. An excellent over-the-fireplace candidate. When buying a gun always have it examined by a competent gunsmith before shooting.
