SHOTGUN WITH DAMASCUS BARREL (!), 30" FULL CHOKE, TAKEDOWN, #174XXX, MADE 1902. This one came out of here in Montana and is one of only a couple I've seen in decades that was special ordered with a damascus barrel. I contacted the Cody Museum and received a "call-in" sheet on this one that verifies the gauge, takedown, barrel length and states "Good Damascus." It was received in the warehouse August 13, 1902 and shipped the next day. The Model 1897 was first listed at $25 for the standard shotgun with "rolled steel barrel." Damascus was available in "Good" 3-blade Damascus and "Fine" 4-blade Damascus. The price for the "Good" added $15 to the standard $25 price! Being a field grade shotgun, one must wonder what the original purchaser thought he was getting with the "Good Damascus" barrel over the standard rolled steel barrel. Interesting that the Model 1897 was purely made for smokeless 2 3/4" 12 ga shells yet was offered in Damascus (also interesting is that Remington offered their side by side shotguns in Damascus and in their catalog stated they were proofed for smokeless shells). With all that said, this example has the early style butt stock with rounded pistol grip bottom and smooth steel butt plate. As is often the case with special order Winchesters, this one has a higher than standard grade of walnut. The stock is solid and shows only light handling- a good cleaning of the wood would bring out the fancier grain. The forend has either been replaced or refinished as it is in better condition than the rest of the gun. The forend is the correct early style with three screws securing it. The takedown is tight and the action functions fine. The receiver is an uncleaned and aged blue to plum/brown. Similarly, the barrel is a dark and uncleaned brownish with good markings and damascus pattern. The bore is bright and excellent. with one shallow ring about 6 inches from the muzzle. A most unusual 120 year old early Model 1897. SOLD Shotgun Gauge: 12 Gauge Manufacturer: Winchester Model: 1897 SPECIAL ORDER Serial Number: 174XXX Barrel Length: 30 Condition: FINE |
