Payment Types Accepted: Check, Cashier's Check, Money Order Description: High condition, exceedingly rare Target New Service “Old Model,” .44 Russian caliber, #14XXX, made 1906. This was Colt’s first large frame swing-out cylinder revolver with the standard frame version introduced late in 1898. The limited production target version came out in 1900 and only lasted until 1909. It was offered only in .44 Russian and .455 Eley (for the British market) with production split equally between the two calibers. First Model, or “Old Model” standard frame New Services were made in relatively small numbers with the target version now extremely rare. Only 8 target models were made during the introductory year of 1900! This example shows excellent high polish Colt blue overall with only normal very light edge wear even on the factory hand-checkered back strap and factory hand-chekered front strap. There is excellent fire blue on the hammer back and trigger sides with the trigger also being factory hand-checkered, excellent screw heads, excellent sharp markings including the correct barrel address and last patent date of 1901. The factory fleur-de-lis fancy checkered walnut grips are excellent with matching serial number inside. The action is crisp and the bore is minty bright with correct, unaltered adjustable sights. It is important to note that many, if not most of these early .44 Russian caliber revolvers have been altered outside the Colt factory by having their chambers lengthened to take the .44 Special cartridge (introduced in 1907). This revolver has the original, unaltered .44 Russian chambers. When introduced, these early New Service revolvers were considered very “modern” and state of the art. Colt was still producing Bisley and Bisley Flattop Target revolvers as well as Model 1877 double action Lightning and Thunderer handguns when this New Service Target left the Colt factory! There is excellent information on these rare Colts in the book Colt’s New Service Revolver by Timothy J. Mullin. It is stated in the book that these early New Service Target revolvers had special hand fitted, tuned and polished actions to affored smooth and crisp trigger pulls. The action on these has to be felt to be believed. One could search for years and not find a First Model Target New Service in original .44 Russian, especially in this superb condition. $3850.
