Description:
HIGH CONDITION AND EXTREMELY RARE .22 SMOOTH BORE MODEL 6 FALLING BLOCK SINGLE SHOT! I've seen a few Stevens single shots marked "Smooth Bore" or "For Shot," but not a Remington Model 6. Of course, Winchester had the little Model 36 single shot 9mm shotshell gun, but that was a distinct model. The Model 6 was an inexpensive, although high quality, boys' rifle chambered in .22 Rim Fire and .32 Rim Fire. They were offered from 1902-1933. Their small size made them popular as a kid's first rifle. Most found today were "loved to death" by the boys (maybe girls) who were lucky enough to have one. Frequently, stocks are cracked, finish is gone and bores are heavily pitted. This rare example, sometimes referred to as "Rat Guns" or "Garden Guns," is in superb condition with matching serial numbers on the barrel and receiver. Usually these were kept in barns or by the kitchen door for dealing with garden or barn pests at close range. They were especially well adapted to inside-the-barn use as the tiny shot charges wouldn't do any damage to walls or roofs. Like the boys' rifles, the smooth bore guns by all makers were purely utilitarian and rarely cared for. This one retains nearly all the vivid case colors on the receiver with only some dulling on the bottom portion and on the bottom of the trigger guard. Even the short upper tang shows vivid color. The barrel is stamped in the usual way for .22 Short, Long and Long Rifle, but has another stamping "SMOOTH BORE." The barrel is fitted with the standard sights for this model and retains most of the lightly aged blue. Stock and forearm are stolid and show only very light handling. Action is tight and the bore is bright. Even the most advanced Remington collections probably don't have one of these in this condition!
