Description:
Serial #8000, .22 LR, 24" barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is a handsome rifle that has an 8-26 dated SA barrel and retains 95-97% of the original blue finish, with some mild freckling starting to appear on the receiver, and some silvering at the muzzle and other high edges and projections. The bolt is finished armory bright and has an exposed headspace adjustment screw without lead seal. The walnut NRA-type stock is fine condition with some light handling marks throughout, as well as some minor bruises on the forearm just aft of the barrel band. A single original "M2"-marked magazine and a commercial sporting bead front sight blade are present. Additionally, a Winchester A5 scope is installed on period blocks. The scope has clear optics, and the crosshair reticle is clear and intact. The original rubber eye-cup is also present, and this is a fantastic example of a pre-war dated M2 .22 that is in excellent condition overall. Included with the rifle is 2019-dated letter from Charles Pate that lists a DCM sell date of February 12, 1929, to F.T. Davison of Washington DC. Frederick Trubee Davison was born on February 7, 1896, the eldest child of noted banker and philanthropist Henry Pomeroy Davison. Frederick attended the Groton School, and then entered Yale University as part of the Class of 1918. It was there that he founded the "First Yale Unit", now considered to be the first US naval reserve air unit. Initially, the unit, which trained and flew privately purchased flying boats, operated without US Navy sanction, but through Davison’s tireless lobbying, the unit was accepted into the Naval Reserve in the spring of 1917. Davison undertook USN flight training at Palm Beach, FL but crashed during his final check flight, breaking his back and injuring his spine. He convalesced for six weeks and, while never seeing combat, remained very active with the unit and was eventually awarded the Navy Cross for his service. Following the end of WW1, Davison returned to Yale and graduated in 1919. He then enrolled in Columbia Law School, securing a position with the Manhattan firm of White & Case following his graduation. In 1922 Davison was elected to the New York State Assembly, where he served until 1926. From 1926 until 1933, he was the Assistant Secretary of War for Aviation, serving both the Coolidge and Hoover administrations. In 1932, while still Assistant Secretary, he ran unsuccessfully for New York Lt. Governor alongside William J. Donovan (who would be named Director of the OSS just before America’s entrance into WW2). During the war Davison held several military posts, eventually rising to the rank of Brigadier General in the US Army: 1941-Acting Deputy Chief of Staff for Army Air Forces Command; 1941 – 1943-Aide to Lt. Gen. Delos Emmons; 1943 – 1946-Chief of Special Projects Division. He retired in 1946 at the age of 50. His next post was as Personnel Director for the newly formed Central Intelligence Agency; he also acted as assistant to Lt. Gen. Walter Bedell Smith, who was the first Director of the CIA. He left the CIA in 1952, and retirement, dying at his home in Locust Valley, NY on November 14, 1974 at the age of 78. This is a very nice rifle, owned by a very important figure in the world of American military aviation and intelligence gathering. It would make a splendid addition to any collection. FFL or C&R
