Description:
***   SOLD   ***   Handsomely engraved and rare Grant trigger plate non-ejector action with sidelever opening and cocking. Grant no. 5126 utilizes the well-respected Horatio Phillips patent action in making this nice handling game gun. Highly figured 30-1/4” nitro proofed barrels with 2-3/4” chambers make this a great gun for clays and game. Made in 1882 and weighs 6lb 9oz.   ***   The 30-1/4” highly figured nitro Damascus barrels are chambered for 2-3/4” shotshells. They are topped by a raised solid concave style rib. The rib is inscribed “Stephen Grant 67 St. James’s Street London”. Typical of guns of the black powder era there is some mild pitting in the barrels and chambers but otherwise the bores are shiny with excellent wall thickness. The nitro proof marks indicate the barrels were reproofed for smokeless powder and 2-3/4” cartridges. They also show that the bores were measured at 18.5mm which equates to 0.728” and that is what they currently measure. The right barrel has a bore diameter of 0.728 with a constriction of 0.005 for Skeet choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.030. The left barrel also has a bore diameter of 0.728 and has a constriction of 0.010 for Improved Cylinder choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.024.   ***   The stock appears to be an historic re-stock and is made of nicely figured European walnut. The checkering on both stock and forearm wood is in nice condition. There are a few handling marks on both from normal usage. Stock dimensions are 14-3/8” to a checkered butt by 1-1/2” by 2-1/4”. Cast off for the righthand shooter.   ***   This Grant is in good mechanical condition with nice engraving and a very interesting trigger-plate action. It has the desirable sidelever opening and is chambered for 2-3/4” shotshells. Great gun for clays or game. Don’t let it slip away!   ***   Please note that photographs are part of the description. Buyer is responsible for all shipping, insurance, and any other related charges. I give a 3-day non-firing inspection period which begins when the item is delivered to your FFL dealer or to a shipping address designated by the purchaser in the case of a gun classified as an Antique. Returns at buyer’s expense. ***   Come and see this great double and other fine shotguns at the MacNab booth at the Southern Side-by-Side Championship & Exhibition April 27th – April 30th, 2023 at Deep River Sporting Clays in Sanford, NC.   ***   Be Sure to Enter the MacNab / John Dickson & Son Scottish Round Action Event. First prize is a fabulous bronze of a Red Grouse and a special bottle of John Dickson & Son single malt whisky.
