Description:
JAPANESE Arsenal WORLD WAR II Pacific Theater Type 38 C&R “TRAINING” Rifle

Smoothbore Arisaka Single Shot Training Rifle

Here we present a Japanese State Military Weapons Smoothbore Single Shot Type 38 Infantry “Training” Rifle, made circa 1940 at one of the state-run military arsenals. The Type 38 rifle and carbine were bolt-action service rifles used by the Empire of Japan predominantly during the Second Sino-Japanese War and the Second World War. The design was adopted by the Imperial Japanese Army in 1905 (the 38th year of the Meiji period, hence "Type 38"). Because the 6.5×50mmSR Arisaka cartridge it fired was considered underpowered, a replacement was devised, which was the Type 99 rifle, but both rifles saw usage until the end of the war. This rifle was an upgrade to the Type 30. This design was the project of Major Nambu, famed and prolific firearms designer in Japan. The Type 38 has been called the best service rifle of WWII. The design was perfected with the advent of the Type 99, nevertheless, the Type 38 saw plenty of action during World War I and World War II.

The Type 38 rifle was produced at five different Japanese arsenals with over 3 million manufactured over the production run between 1906 through 1944. The Tokyo Arsenal produced 2,029,000 between 1906 and 1932. The Kokura Arsenal produced 494,700 between 1933 and 1941. The Nagoya Arsenal produced 312,500 between 1932 and 1942. The Hoten/Mukden Arsenal produced 148,800 between 1937 and 1944. The Jinsen Arsenal produced 13,400 during the year of 1942.

This example would have originally be chambered in 6.5mm and later bored out to a smoothbore 7.7mm. It has “school type” stock markings and includes a bayonet.

The overall condition is good. Robust action. The bore is in good shape for its age. Solid stock. The trigger guard is missing a screw and allows it to drop away from the stock. Good bayonet. Visible marks are legible.
