Description:
Here is a Civil War Starr Arms Company .54 caliber percussion saddle ring carbine in fine original, complete as issued condition. The barrel retains nearly all of its factory original blue finish showing some light age and darkening, but a perfectly smooth barrel with both original blued sights. The frame, lock and hammer are aged silver gray gunmetal mixing with an untouched light brown aged patina on top. All factory markings on the metal are very crisp with matching serial numbers. The .54 caliber rifled bore is fine with bright sharp clean rifling aand no pitting visible. The mechanics are excellent and tight. The breech block, vents, and nipple are clear and in shootable condition. There is no visible pitting on the iron parts, just a few small scattered patches of dried grease and dirt, mostly on the inside face of the hammer. The smooth brass buttplate and barrel band are in fine shape. All of the screws are original and in excellent condition and the entire gun can be easily disassembled. The dark oil finished walnut stocks also fine, there are just a few small rubs and scrapes right behind the saddle ring from where the ring and sling hook scraped that area. One visible inspector's cartouche remains right below this area as shown in the photos. This carbine does not have the usual broken toe of the stock as often seen on the brass mounted Starr carbines The Starr was actually rated higher than the Sharps carbine when the guns were tested by the U.S. Ordnance Dept; the breech mechanism of the Starr was found to have a much better gas seal than that of the Sharps. Most Starr carbines saw hard use during the War and this one is in much better condition than what is usually encountered and displays great. The buyer will pay actual shipping cost.
