Description:
The Ithaca Model 37 is one of the original classic shotguns along with the Remington Models 31, and 870, and the Winchester Models 1897 and 1912. It was based on a 1915 patent by the famous John M. Browning, initially being marketed by Remington as the Model 17. A refined version, introduced in 1937 by Ithaca under the designation Model 37, was an immediate hit in part due to the nature of its operation. Unlike most pump shotguns which eject shells to the side, the 37 ejected its spent shells downward through the same port shells were manually loaded into the magazine from. This enabled both left and right-handed shooters to operate the 37 with equal ease, without the former having to deal with empty shells hitting them in the face. The 37 shown here is one of those made in recent years by the Ithaca Gun Co. The Featherlight model features an “A” Grade wood stock and forearm with cut checkering, light receiver engraving, and a smoothbore barrel (with removable chokes) with orange fiberoptic front sight. The use of a fiberoptic makes it easy to see the front sight at dawn or dusk. The bore is in excellent condition. The bluing is in excellent condition on both the barrel and receiver. The only wear in the finish is on the magazine tube and is rather light for a pump shotgun. The butt pad has flared edges at the top and bottom. The current choke (Improved Cylinder) when full seated sticks out past the barrel by about 1 mm. It is hardly noticeable unless one looks closely at it. Overall, the Featherlight has seen little use and remains in excellent condition. Included with it is the original box, two spare chokes (Full and Mod.), and a choke wrench. The Model 37 was found to be reliable in even the worst of conditions and was utilized by the U.S. military in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. They have also seen extensive use with law enforcement. As a testament to the 37’s popularity and quality, over two million have been produced since it was introduced.
