Description:
SOLD For sale is a vintage Belgian Browning SA-22 rifle of the very first production run from 1956 to 1960. These early rifles are the most sought after by collectors for the quality of the materials used and overall craftsmanship used to produce them. Another important aspect of these first production guns is the adjustable rear "wheelsight" which was discontinued in late 1960 replaced with the flip up rear sight.

This specific rifle is the Grade 2 variation with a factory coin or flash nickel receiver and hand engraved game scenes! These pre 1962-1963 guns are more likely to have this finish instead of the French Grey that you see on later production high grade guns. It does vary from gun to gun, some much more shiny and polished, with some almost a matte finish. The difference between the two being a more metallic look to the Coin finish and a very flat almost ceramic look to the French Grey.

The quality of the engraving on this rifle, and most early guns for that matter, is exceptional. The oak leafs bordering the game scene are distinct and well executed, the animals are accurately shaped and well shaded. There are very few signs of wear on the metal, a few light marks here and there but you would be hard pressed to notice them.

The wood quality is good and about what you can expect for Grade II's of the era, the only drawback being that there is a small tight repaired crack in the tang and subsequently the wood has been refinished. It is a pretty nice job but not quite the original open pore oil finish Browning was using at the time.
