Description:
The Taylor’s & Co. Cattleman is fairly close reproduction of the Colt Single Action Army (SAA) revolver, also known as the Peacemaker. This one is chambered for the legendary .45 Long Colt. This is the cartridge most associated with the Peacemaker, having been chambered in the revolver more often than any other caliber. In total, between the standard, Bisley, and Flat-Top Target versions of the First-Generation Peacemaker (1873-1940), up to 158,884 were chambered for the .45 Colt compared to 71,392 for the .44-40 Winchester, 50,250 for the .38-40 Winchester, 43,284 for the .32-20 Winchester, and 19,676 for the .41 Long Colt. One simple reason for the .45 Colt's popularity back in the Old West was its stopping power. It was well suited as a self-defense round. This Cattleman has a 4-3/4” barrel. In Old West terminology, this revolver would be considered a “Quickdraw” model, named for its ability to be quickly withdrawn from its holster. There are two other original barrel lengths for an SAA. The Cavalry Model, with a 7.5” barrel, named for its use by the U.S. Cavalry, and the Artillery Model with a 5.5” barrel, again named for its use by a branch of the U.S. Army, in this case the artillery branch. This example is in new in the box. It features a blued steel, birds head grip frame, a beautiful case-hardened finish on the cylinder frame and hammer, and a blued barrel and cylinder. The screws, pins, ejector rod and ejector rod housing are also blued. The wood grips are checkered. The birdshead grip is based on the style of grip used on the Colt Model 1877 Double Action Revovler, although the two are not identical. The grip style is designed to be short but comfortable to shoot with and is well suited for the quick draw.
