Description:
This is a fine example of the Lee Enfield No 4 Mk 1* rifle made by Savage Arms during World War II. The rifle and accessories appear to be unissued. Accessories in this condition are difficult to find. The condition of this Savage No 4 Mk 1* along with the accessories would make it a great addition to any Lee Enfield or World War II collection.
  • This bolt action rifle was produced by Savage in 1942 or 1943 at Chicopee Falls, MA as evidenced by the "C" in the serial number. There are no import marks.
  • It was produced under the Lend Lease Act and is stamped "U.S. Property". Other stampings include No 4 Mk 1* and the block letter "S" for Savage. There are matching serial numbers on the receiver and on the bolt.  Without disassembling the rifle, a stamped "S" is visible on numerous parts including the magazine and follower, trigger guard, front and rear sling swivels, butt plate, front sight, front sight protector, upper band, nose cap, breechbolt, cocking piece, breechbolt head, and rear sight. "S" is also stamped on the underside of the stock on the wrist.
  • The rifle is in the standard .303 British caliber, holding 10 rounds in the detachable box magazine.
  • The overall length of the rifle is 44". The barrel length is 25".
  • The wood is clean having all of its finish with a couple of small dents in the left side of the stock.
  • The metal has no damage or rust. A collector looked at it and thinks the receiver may have been touched up with cold bluing at some point. A second collector looked at it and could not say that it had been. The finish on the metal of Mark 4 rifles was oil blackened. That procedure was a system much like parkerizing but left a smooth luster. The finish on this receiver has a smooth luster and the color over the entire receiver is uniform, including any recesses and edges. I am not an expert on Lee Enfields but after my close examination of this rifle it is my opinion the bluing is original.  However, I have lowered the price from what I had initially asked to reflect any question about the bluing.
  • The rifle's bore is sharp and clean.
  • The original cleaning kit is still stored in the stock under the butt plate.
  • The No 4 Mk 2 spike bayonet was made by Savage and the scabbard and frog by Beckwith Manufacturing.
  • The canvas receiver cover was made by Savage in 1942 and comes with its original box.
  • Included are two unissued web slings, one khaki colored (army) and the other blue (navy).
