The MAS-36 was the standard military rifle for the French from 1936 to 1952. It was not produced during the German occupation in World War II. The MAS-36 has a unique bolt handle that is bent forward in a “dog leg” to make it more convenient for the soldier to operate. The gun was designed without a safety as French soldiers were expected to keep a loaded magazine in the rifle and only chamber a round when necessary.
