On average, they are capable of ½” MOA. The 40-X is based on the Remington Model 700 Short Action (there are no long action 40-X rifles). It is chambered for the classic 7.62 NATO round. The receiver for the 40-X is usually made of carbon steel although later examples were made from stainless steel. The stainless-steel barrel is 27-1/8 inches in length and uses a 1:12 inches twist. The barrel has a diameter of 0.875 inches. Like most Model 40-Xs, this example is a single shot action. Only a small number of .308/7.62-chambered 40-Xs were built as repeaters, having been clip-slotted at the factory for an extra fee. The walnut stock uses a wide-body forend and allows for the barrel to be free-floating. This example, according to the barrel date code, was produced in January of 1981, making this rifle around 42 years old. It is in excellent shape for its age. The bore is in pristine shape. The rear sling swivel stud was apparently knocked against something at some point and made a shallow dent in the bottom of the stock. The remainder of the wood exhibits the usual handling wear. There are no cracks. The back of the receiver has a small nick in the metal. Please see the pictures. The bolt plug exhibits some light wear to the finish. The rifle appears to be equipped with the famous triple-lever trigger, as the pull weight is extremely light. There is an adjustment screw in front of the trigger to adjust the pull weight. The rifle is equipped with a set Leupold 30 mm scope rings. With the right scope, this rifle would make an excellent competition rifle.
