Guns Listing ID: 702688

The MLE 1892 (Modèle 1892), or Berthier carbine, is a French rifle from the late 1800’s. The carbine was developed for mounted cavalry troops, having a shorter barrel and a bent bolt handle. This Carbine came after the Germans adopted the carbine version of the Gewehr 88, while the French were still using carbine, single-shot, Gras rifles. A Carbine version of the 1886 Lebel rifle was not a feasible option, as the Lebel needed the full-length for the tube feed magazine, thus, the Berthier carbine was developed by a senior railway engineer for the Algerian railways and implemented for military use.

The distinguishing features were the chambering for the smokeless 8mm Lebel, the short barrel (in fact it was shorter than the Gras carbine), and the fact that it fed from 3 round Mannlicher-style enbloc clips, increasing the speed of reloading. In 1907, a full-size rifle version of this rifle was developed to supplement the French arsenal’s 1886 Lebel rifle.

This Berthier carbine has been fitted with the M16 magazine upgrade, increasing the capacity to accept the WWI 5-round enbloc clips. The rifle was also upgraded again, post 1932, to increase the size of the chamber for N Balle ammo, as by the 1930’s, 8mm Lebel was mainly a machinegun round that was very hot.

The Berthier rifle and carbine are much like the American U.S. Model of 1917, as they were extensively used as a workhorse in the military, but never got the official honor of being that standard issue rifle for their respected militaries.

This rifle is missing the magazine and the stock has two cracks.
