Description:
SCARCE CIVIL WAR HARPERS FERRY U.S. MODEL 1855 TYPE 1 PERCUSSION RIFLE MUSKET DATED 1858. All original and matching and fine example. 40” round .58 cal. rifled barrel with Harpers Ferry “V/P/EAGLE HEAD” proofs at the left breech and date stamped 1858 at top of breech. Lock stamped “U.S./HARPERS FERRY” and date stamped 1858 as well. Maynard tape primer door stamped with the ‘FEDERAL EAGLE”. Early Type 1 desirable long range rear sight and original front sight. Butt plate tang stamped “U.S.”. In superior condition with the original and very handsome patinated metal finish and the finish on the stock. Distinct “LS” rectangular cartouche on left side panel directly behind the rear lock plate screw. Excellent working order including the Maynard Tape Primer which has all the original parts. And surprisingly it has an excellent plus bore with very crisp rifling. Only about 12,000 produced in total and nearly all the surviving Harpers Ferry Model 1855 Rifle Muskets saw service with the Confederacy during the Civil War keeping in mind thousands were destroyed in April 1861 during Stonewall Jackson’s attack with the burning of the storage warehouse resulting in a very low survival rate possibly as low as 400-500 remaining. Superior example and one of the Civil War’s most desirable firearms.
