Description:
This rifle is the US Model 1898, also known as the Krag-Jorgensen and the 30-40 Krag, The Krag was adopted in 1892 as the US military's first bolt action rifle and was designed for smokeless powder cartridges. The Krag replaced the Trapdoor rifle, which had been in service since 1866. Just eleven years later the 30-40 Krag was itself replaced with the Springfield Model 1903 rifle. There were about 500,000 Krag's made at the Springfield Armory from 1892 to 1903 in four models, the 1892, 1896, 1898, and 1899.
  • The bolt action Krag rifle featured here is a Model 1898 made by Springfield in 1901.
  • It is in the standard 30-40 caliber (.30 caliber bullet with 40 grains of smokeless powder).
  • It appears to be all original.
  • The metal has a nice patina. There is some minor pitting in a few places on the outside of the barrel.
  • The bore is sharp and clean.
  • The stock has dings and dents but no cracks or serious gouges and it has not been sanded.
  • The inspector’s cartouche, ‘JSA 1901’, is on the left side of the stock.
  • There is a "P" firing proof mark stamped on the underside of the wrist of the stock.
  • It has the correct Model 1901 rear sight, which is in nice condition.
