Description:
The Colt Python! A name that has grown in status over the many years since its introduction to the point of being near legendary. The Python is often considered the “Cadillac” of revolvers or “Ferrari” for those in the modern era. Designed to best any .357 Magnum revolver produced at the time, production of the Python began in 1955. Built originally of carbon steel in either a blued or nickel finish, a stainless version was added in 1983. The stainless version was produced until 1996. The original carbon steel models lasted in general production until 1998. Given the Python’s then unique and stylish appearance, the revolver found itself appearing in many films and later video games. Such media depictions have only added to its mythos over the years. The Python is most easily recognized by its vented rib, though many Colt revolvers later used this same feature. They are known for their extreme accuracy. One reason for this was the use of what many Colt fans refer to as the “silver ball method”. A Colt trade secret, persons who were actually allowed to see it stated that a silvery ball made of an unknown material were pressed down the unassembled barrel’s bore by hand tool, leaving the bore very shiny. Another reason was that Colt used a faster twist rate. The third reason for the Python’s exceptional accuracy lies in the basic Colt design. When the revolver is at full cock, just as the trigger is pressed, the cylinder locks up for the duration of the hammer strike. Other revolvers have a hint of looseness even at full-cock. Colt dropped this feature when they introduced the Mark III series of revolvers. Sadly, falling interest in revolvers and lowered demand for them on the market led to Colt ceasing production of all double action revolvers, even from the custom shop, in 2003. Over the years, original Pythons grew in value with, in some cases, rarer examples going for well into the six grand range. Needless to say Colt eventually realized that there was a growing interest in revolvers again by the early 2010s. Testing the waters, Colt reintroduced a newer version of the Cobra in 2017. After reintroducing the King Cobra in 2019, Colt was finally ready to do what fans had been wanting for over a decade – release a new Python. In 2020, the new Python 2020 was released, featuring several improvements over the originals. The newer model is created using modern production methods, but CNC machines are just capable of producing tight tolerances, particularly in the chambers, barrel throats, and leads. The front sight is removable, and the barrel crown is counter-sunk. This both protects the true muzzle of the Python and improves accuracy. The barrel is a true heavy barrel rather than the screw-in barrel and shroud found on most modern revolvers. The frame’s top strap is 30 percent thicker, giving the 2020 model a level of toughness comparable to the Ruger GP100. The rear face of the cylinder features a cutout designed to increase the safety of the shooter in the event of a blown cartridge case head. The action has been improved with the simplification of the design – there are fewer moving components, and therefore the action is much smoother. The double action pull should run around 9.0 lbs. in weight, with the single action coming in at 5 lbs. The trigger and hammer are reinforced to increase longevity. The heavy hammer also aids in ensuring good primer strikes. The example shown here is new in the box and ready to go. The grips are quite beautiful in their own right. The polished stainless finish gives the Python 2020 a gorgeous appearance.
