1880s Antique SMITH & WESSON .44 RUSSIAN DOUBLE ACTION First Model Revolver
With Inscribed and Illustrated Presentation Ivory Grips!
Here we present an antique Smith & Wesson .44 Russian Double Action First Model Revolver made circa the 1880s in Springfield, Massachusetts. This one was finished in nickel and has presentation ivory grips. The top of the left grip depicts an All-Seeing Eye within a laurel wreath. Just underneath this is a banner reading: “FIAT JUSTITIA RUAT COELUM”, which is Latin for “Let justice be done, though the heavens fall”. This phrase seems to have been coined in the 18th Century and was well-used in the 19th Century, especially regarding the abolition of slavery. Finally, the majority of the left grip panel is taken by a warrior-like Lady Liberty, dressed in flowing white skirt and blue breast plate, barefoot, with wild, flowing black hair, clutching a blue and white shield emblazoned with “SAN FRANCISCO” in her left hand and a curved blade sword in her right. On the outer edge of the right grip panel is inscribed “Presented to John Coleman from William”. This is such a neat piece, and we certainly wish we could positively identify the presenter and the recipient of this revolver.
Though the production run for this revolver was between 1881 and 1913, all frames were made between 1881 and 1898. Smith & Wesson’s .44 Double Action First Model revolver seems to be one of that company’s more neglected designs. It tends to be overlooked as it came between the popular No. 3 Single Action and the various Hand Ejector Models. The primary chambering for this revolver was .44 Russian, of which 53,590 were made between 1881 and 1913. First Model DA .44s employed the usual S&W top-break ejection system.
The overall condition is good. Original nickel finish and case colors on the hammer and trigger. The action (hammer/trigger) is strong in double action, however the cylinder does not index properly at present and tends to overshoot the next chamber. Lockup is good. The star ejector works well. In single action the hammer slips out of the full-cock notch and is caught by the trigger before it falls. The bore is in great shape for age and black powder use. It has strong rifling and remains reflective of light. The grips are in very nice shape and have retained the illustrations and inscription well.
