Description:
General Specs: L.C. Smith, Year 1893, 12 Gauge, 7lbs 13oz, Chokes F/F, LOP 13 5/16", DAH 3 1/16", DAC 1 15/16"
Serial Number: 537

What a gorgeous example of the early L.C. Smith gun making abilities we have here in this antique Quality A-1 Elsie.  The A-1 is the last of the high-grade L.C. Smith offerings to show the amazing sculpted frame with the concave bolsters on the underside and the graceful breech balls hand filed to perfection.  She even displays beaded fences as seen on Purdey and Holland and Holland BEST guns.  This gun, sn537 made in 1893, is still in excellent condition, with beautiful 30” Damascus barrels showing clean shiny bores, factory bore diameters, full chokes both barrels, and a very strong and healthy 32 thousandths of an inch minimum barrel wall thickness anywhere in either barrel.  These are Damascus barrels that are safe to shoot mild modern loads (1 oz. loads at under 1200 fps) through the factory 2 ¾” chambers.  The barrels are tight on the hinge pin and breech face like a new gun, the top lever is well right of center, and we have just finished a full VFI Certification process with Ultrasonic cleaning of the action and forend iron, inspection of all parts, and a proper lubrication and reassembly.  VFI Certified guns carry a 90-day mechanical warranty giving you assurance you are not buying a gun with underlying, expensive issues.  All parts are original to the gun, the engraving is still sharp and clear, and there is even some case color remaining on the action.  The wood-to-metal fit is superb with no cracks, splits, or repairs, the checkering is very fine 28lpi and shows almost no wear.  The nicely figured French walnut stocks show some handling marks, minor in nature, and not nearly what you might expect for a 130-year-old Elsie that has fed countless families and provided grand sport for generations of shotgunners.  This gun is fully functional, and very able to perform her tasks for another 130 years with the proper care and maintenance.  This is a rare find, as they only made 713 L.C. Smith Quality A-1 guns in total, and few remain in such nice, original condition.  When examining this engraving closely, you will note the detail and skill that went into creating this shotgun, with very fine, expertly cut scroll, background shading, and animal scenes.  Look closely at the dogs on the right and left side of the action to see the muscles, fur, and skeletal detail that you just don’t find in today’s guns until you reach the above $20,000 level of workmanship.  The old saying “they just don’t make them like they used to” is clearly evident when examining the workmanship on this fine Elsie.  We have priced this gun to sell, and you get a LOT for your money with this investment quality American made work of art.  Shoot her with pride at your next vintage shoot, take a turkey this spring season, and knock some doves from the sky at 50 yards this fall.  Thanks for looking!
