Gunners searching for vintage American double guns realize that Ansley H. Fox created what he claimed to be “THE FINEST GUN IN THE WORLD”, and there is reason to agree.  Fox wisely created his 16ga. guns on the diminutive 20ga. frame, bringing to you the lightest, best balanced of all the American double guns.  If you have been searching for a graded Fox 16ga. you have noticed how few are available.  Only 2500 Fox A Grades in 16ga. were ever produced.  Few are offered for sale and if you do find one, they are poorly described and the photographs tell you little, so how do you know which gun to buy?    IT IS EASY TO BUY THE WRONG GUN WITH COSTLY ISSUES.  At Vintage Firearms, Inc. (VFI) we inspect each gun before purchase, and our gunsmiths clean and service each as needed. This gun’s action was stripped to the smallest parts, Ultrasonic cleaned and scrubbed, all parts inspected for integrity and function, lubricated, and reassembled, providing a VFI CERTIFIED GUN, a $275 service in our shop.  THIS FOX A GRADE 16GA. COMES WITH A 90-DAY MECHANICAL WARRANTY.  THIS FOX, SN301812 BUILT IN 1924, WAS RETURNED TO SAVAGE ARMS FOR WORK SOME TIME AFTER 1935.  FOX GUNS SENT TO SAVAGE AFTER THIS YEAR ROUTINELY HAD THE CHAMBERS LENGTHENED TO 2 ¾” AND THE LEFT BARREL STAMPED AS SUCH (VFI also lengthened the forcing cones to 1 ½” tapers).  Modern chambers and long forcing cones makes for safe shooting with softer recoil and better patterns.  The left barrel is properly labeled as Philly barrels but show Savage AND FOX proof marks on the barrel flats.  As many reading this ad know, I know a LOT about Fox shotguns.  I am certain that this Fox A Grade was returned to Savage Arms for a full restoration, including a new buttstock.  Looking closely at the receiver you will see definitive Fox case colors, as they are distinct.  Also, the checkering pattern on the buttstock is the later A Grade checkering used by Savage Arms after they bought out A.H. Fox Gun Co.  This Fox is wonderfully restored, and all evidence points towards a factory restoration during the Savage years. The wood to metal fit, screws, checkering, and all mechanics are superb.  The barrels are tight on the hinge pin and breech face like a new gun.  If you want an upland gun you can rely on, buy one that is field ready and backed by a reputable Fox expert.  This Fox A Grade 16ga. weighs 5 3/4lbs. and balances perfectly between your hands, with 26” barrels choked SK/M, mirror bores, and excellent stock dimensions (see specifications below).   THIS IS A STUNNING FOX A GRADE NEEDING NOT A THING FOR YOU TO TAKE HER TO THE UPLAND FIELDS OR CLAYS COURSE.  Everything has already been done, including being made safe to shoot modern, readily available ammunition.  What a “killer” bird gun we have here!  THIS IS YOUR GUN!  Don’t hesitate, it won’t last long.  Thanks for looking.

We employ full time gunsmiths on premises and can perform alterations to suit your needs within a few weeks of purchase. Common requests are: -stock bending to suit your particular requirements -addition of any specified butt pad to increase length of pull -alteration of chokes to suit your shooting preferences -lengthening of chambers and forcing cones -darkening stock color with penetrating stains -restoring any part of the gun including rust blue, charcoal blue, bone and charcoal case color, wood restoration and checkering recuts. If you like one our guns but it needs "tweaked", let us know and we can quote you a time and price. Some enthusiasts like the guns "as found" and others want them "just so". We often list guns as found and let the particular buyer choose how they want their gun to fit or look.
