Description:
1866 French Chassepot Needle fire breechloading rifle in excellent condition.  This firearm was the French service arm from 1866 to 1874.  They utilized a 386 gr. lead bullet driven by 86 grs. of 2F black powder.  Ignition was by a musket cap seated in the base of a paper cartridge.  The needle is in good condition as is the rubber bolt seal.  The bore is excellent.  All matching !!  The rifle at one time was either captured by the British and sold off as surplus by Thomas Christy of London.  The cartouche on the left rear side of the buttstock has Christy's address.  I have been shooting this rifle.  One of the photos show the paper cartridges with a cardboard base wad with a percussion cap glued in.  The paper cartridge holds a cast lead bullet sized and lubricated to .458' diameter with 75 grs of 2F black powder.  Included is a wood dowel form and a metal pattern to cut the paper cartridges.  The paper is wrapped and glued on the wood dowel form.  There are several videos on U Tube showing the technique for making up the paper cartridges.  A really unusual early breechloading military rifle that turns heads at the rifle range.  No FFL required.  Antique!  Still available.  Make an offer!
