ANTIQUE SINGLE ACTION ARMY .44-40, 4 3/4" BARREL, #177XXX, FACTORY LETTER, SHIPPED 1898. This is a really nice, honest Single Action that was used, but well taken care of. There is still some good blue in the top and bottom ejector housing flutes as well as good aged blue in the cylinder flutes and in the most protected usual areas with the balance an even gray. The frame is mottled gray with a hint of light case color ahead of the cylinder. Cylinder pin and screw heads are excellent. Correct two line patent date on the barrel is sharp as are the frame patent dates and rampant colt. The left side of the barrel has the iconic "COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER" stamping used only on .44-40 caliber Single Actions. Grips are fine and show only normal light wear with no chips or cracks. Matching serial numbers, correct hammer, four clicks to the hammer and fine bore with sharp rifling (only a little dark). Colt letter from 1988 verifies the caliber, barrel length, grips, finish and shows it was in a group of 25 guns shipped to Simmons Hardware Co., St. Louis, MO on March 23, 1898. This is a classic antique cowboy Colt that was no doubt paired with a rifle or carbine in the same caliber. Nice original unmessed with condition, great caliber, antique serial number and factory letter.
