The big .44 top break double action revolvers were made from 1881-1913. It was originally offered in .44 Russian with the .44-40 being introduced in 1886. Even though these were sold until 1913, all frames were manufactured before 1899 and are therefore antique. There were 53,590 made in .44 Russian caliber with only 15,340 made as the "Frontier Model" in .44-40 caliber. Almost all of these were manufactured with standard sights. Any example with target sights is a rarity- especially in .44-40 caliber. Further, target sighted revolvers almost always were made with the longer 6" or 6 1/2" barrels. This example with nickel finish has a 5" barrel. Smith & Wesson serial numbered all important parts, so verifying barrel lengths and sights can be done easily by simply checking serial numbers. This revolver has matching numbers on the frame, barrel, cylinder, grips AND TARGET SIGHT BARREL LATCH. It is also fitted with a Lyman half moon with ivory bead front sight (known as a "Jack" sight). Excellent bright nickel with some scattered light freckling on the cylinder- mainly in a few flutes, and some freckling/peeling on the rear portion of the frame behind the cylinder- mostly on the right side where a holster strap typically rubs. Fine blue on the trigger guard, cylinder latch and front sight. Still some good case color on the trigger sides and hammer. Grips are excellent, tight mech. and barrel hinge, bright bore and excellent screw heads. This one has excellent markings including the Pre-1900 two line barrel address with patent dates and "44 WINCHESTER CTG" stamping on the left side of the barrel. Considering the barrel length, caliber and finish, there can't be more than a handful of target sighted Double Action Frontier revolvers like this one.
