That stamp on the left side of the action - E.B. 13. 145. is probably for Ersatz Brigade 13. weapon 145. When the German army was getting ready to put all the newly formed regiments in the field for the spring offensive in 1915, it needed rifles. So it pulled several units out of the front line for a rest, took away their 98 Mausers and gave them the out-dated Gew. 88s. It was at this time that a lot of them were stamped on the chamber with the new regiment^s number, at least in part because the other marking places on the barrel bands were already used up.
