Description:
***   SOLD   ***   CONDITION * CONDITION * CONDITION   ***   W.R. Pape of Newcastle-on-Tyne was justifiably known as the “Purdey of the North” for the high quality of his work and here is a great example. A very late 12 bore backaction non-ejector hammergun with highly figured 30” nitro Damascus barrels matched with a highly figured European walnut stock. Rebounding hammers that sit below the shooter’s line of sight when cocked. According to the records, this svelte hammergun no. 10509, was made in 1903. A great handling game gun at 6lb 7oz. Easy to carry and handle during a long day afield.   ***   The 30” nitro Damascus barrels are highly figured and recently rebrowned. They were recently reproofed in Birmingham for nitro 2-1/2” shotshells and are topped by a raised solid concave game style rib. The rib is inscribed “W.R. Pape . Newcastle-on-Tyne . Inventor of Choke-Boring .” The right barrel is bored 0.722 with a constriction of 0.002 for Cylinder choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.028. The left barrel is bored 0.731 and has a constriction of 0.014 for Improved Cylinder choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.024.   ***   The Prince-of-Wales grip stock and splinter forearm are made of highly figured European walnut. The stock has a thin horn buttplate and the forearm has an ebony tip. The finish is in great condition and the checkering is crisp. There are only a few very small handling marks. Stock dimensions are 14-1/2” by 1-3/8” by 2”. Cast off slightly for the righthanded shot.   ***   With a manufacturing date of 1903 this is a very late model backaction hammergun and it is in great mechanical and cosmetic condition. A very handsome gun with its nitro Damascus barrels and highly figured stock. It is very well balanced and handles like a dream. Very rare to run across a backaction hammergun in this condition.  ***   I am an FFL and will need a signed copy of your dealer’s license. The photographs are part of the description. Not for sale where prohibited by state or local laws. Buyer is responsible for all shipping, insurance, and any other related charges. I give a 3-day non-firing inspection period which begins when it arrives at the buyer’s FFL. Returns at buyer’s expense.
