Description: Fine Etched Panel Colt Black Powder Frontier Six Shooter Single Action Army Revolver Manufacturer: Colt Model: Single Action Army Type: Revolver Gauge: 44-40 Barrel: 7 1/2 inch round Finish: Nickel Grip: Checkered Ivory Description: This is a much sought after example of an etched panel Colt Single Action Army revolver as manufactured in 1879. The matching numbered barrel has the one-line address stamped on top, "44," indicating 44 WCF caliber, stamped on the underside and the etched panel "COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER" on the left side. This etched barrel panel marking was officially replaced by the Colt factory in the early 120,000 serial number range with the much easier to produce and larger roll-stamping. The left side of the frame is marked with the three-line, three patent dates. The matching serial number is on the frame, trigger guard, back strap, cylinder and barrel. The accompanying factory letter confirms a manufacture date of 1879 as well as having been shipped to Winchester Repeating Arms Co. on March 29,1879 in a shipment of 25 guns. The barrel length and type of stocks are not listed. Rating Definition: Fine. The revolver retains 65% bright original nickel finish with the balance a smooth gray patina. The etched caliber panel is excellent. The Ivory grips are worn around the edges and the checkering is clear but worn. The right grip panel has five heavily worn notches which were deliberately carved into the lower edge, showing that the pistol has seen some "serious" use early in it's life. Mechanically excellent. All screws are in fine to excellent condition. The bore is fine, with crisp lands and grooves and even light frosting throughout. SOLD Antique: Yes Handgun Caliber: .44-40 Winchester (.44 WCF) |
