Civil War Antique Rifle-Musket w/ Confederate FAYETTEVILLE ARMORY Lock CSA
1864 Dated Shortened 2-Band Rifle
Here we present a Civil War Rifle-Musket with a Fayetteville Armory Lock dated 1864. The barrel and stock appear to be a Springfield Model 1863 Type II. The lock is the type IV from Fayetteville Armory. This was someone’s way to fill a niche in his collection for a very rare Confederate arm, only 5,000 of which were originally produced.
The Fayetteville Rifle was a 2 banded rifle produced at the Confederate States Arsenal in Fayetteville, North Carolina. The machinery which produced these weapons was primarily that captured at the United States Arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia, which was previously used to produce the U.S. Model 1855 Rifle. The weapon was produced in .58 caliber from early in 1862 until the capture and destruction of the arsenal by Union forces under General W. T. Sherman on March 11, 1865.
The overall condition is good. Mixed patina with heavier oxidation in places. The action is strong. The bore is reflective with good rifling. The stock is missing the forend cap and has been lightly refinished; remains solid.
